Background of the Study
Local governments in Nigeria face challenges in managing public funds, which include corruption, poor financial management, and lack of transparency. The adoption of IPSAS at the local government level is expected to enhance financial accountability, transparency, and overall governance. This study aims to examine the effect of IPSAS adoption on financial accountability in Nigerian local governments, focusing on whether IPSAS has led to improved public finance management and more reliable financial reporting.
Statement of the Problem
Prior to the adoption of IPSAS, financial accountability in Nigerian local governments was often compromised by weak financial reporting systems and a lack of standardization. IPSAS aims to address these challenges by introducing a uniform financial reporting framework that improves transparency and accountability. This study will assess whether IPSAS adoption has had a positive effect on financial accountability at the local government level.
